WHAT IT MEASURES
The Botox Obsession Index ranks all 50 states on per-capita Botox search
activity, local provider and clinic density, and relative Google search
interest. It measures interest and market presence. It does not measure
procedures performed, units injected, or money spent, and none of those
figures are published at state level.

50% Estimated average monthly Google searches across 31 Botox terms,
per 100,000 residents (Google Ads Keyword Planner, one request per state)
35% Clinicians in the NPPES national provider registry under relevant
taxonomy codes, plus mapped aesthetic clinic locations, per 100,000
residents (NPPES and the Google Places Aggregate API)
15% Google Trends subregion interest in Botox over the trailing 12 months

Each measure is rescaled so the highest state scores 100 and the lowest 0,
then combined at those weights. Where two states tie, the higher search rate
places first. Displayed scores are truncated to one decimal, not rounded, so
two states differing only in the second decimal never appear as a tie.

  OBSESSION SCORE = 0.50 x demand + 0.35 x supply + 0.15 x interest

Population is US Census Bureau ACS 2024 one-year estimates. The District of
Columbia was measured but is reported separately from the state ranking: it is
a city rather than a state and its per-resident figures are not comparable. It
is in the dataset with all component scores.

THE STORY IN FIVE FACTS
  1. New York is America's most Botox-obsessed state, scoring 84.1 of 100.
  2. Colorado is #2 at 84.0, ahead of California (80.9) and Florida (75.6).
  3. New York ranks #1 for Botox searches per resident but only
#7 for provider and clinic density.
  4. Nine of the top 10 states are in the West or Northeast. The Midwest has none.
  5. Mississippi ranks #50, last on search demand and last on provider and
     clinic supply.

One more finding: "masseter botox" (jaw Botox) draws an estimated 74,020
searches a month, the #2 Botox-related term measured, behind only "botox".

SCALE
508,000 estimated Botox searches a month, across 31 terms and 50 states
44,276 clinicians listed in the national provider registry
   55,290 mapped aesthetic clinic locations
2.3x gap in searches per resident between New York and Mississippi

Clinicians and clinic locations are two different kinds of observation: one
counts people, the other counts places. The index adds them as a single
market measure, never as a provider count.

LIMITS WORTH KNOWING
Google reports search volume as estimates in rounded bands, not exact counts.
Google Trends is a share-of-searches measure, which makes it noisier for the
least populated states; it carries the smallest weight for that reason.
Clinic counts come from business listings, which are not a licensing
registry, and a listed clinic is a location rather than a practitioner. An
NPPES taxonomy code is self-reported: it records a clinician's stated
specialty and does not confirm current licensure or that they inject Botox.
Nothing in this study is medical advice or a clinical claim.
