Illuminize vs. Vitalize vs. Rejuvenize: Which SkinMedica Peel Is Right for You?

SkinMedica offers three professional chemical peels: Illuminize Peel®, Vitalize Peel® and Rejuvenize Peel™. The main differences are treatment intensity, the skin concerns each one addresses, and how much visible peeling and downtime to expect. Illuminize is the gentlest, Vitalize sits in the middle, and Rejuvenize is the most intensive.

This guide compares the three SkinMedica chemical peels side by side: what each one is made of, who each suits, how they compare head to head, and how to choose. The final decision is made at your appointment, after your provider assesses your skin, but you can arrive knowing which one or two to discuss.

How the three SkinMedica peels differ

All three are professional-only peels: SkinMedica sells them to licensed providers rather than to consumers, and each is applied in a single clinic visit. None of them is a “deep” peel in the dermatology sense, the phenol or high-strength TCA peels that require sedation and weeks of recovery. Within the SkinMedica line, they differ in four ways.

• Treatment intensity. Illuminize is the gentlest, Vitalize is more intensive, and Rejuvenize is the most intensive.
• Skin concerns. Mild for Illuminize, mild to moderate for Vitalize, moderate to severe for Rejuvenize.
• Visible peeling. Little or none with Illuminize, mild to moderate flaking with Vitalize, more noticeable peeling with Rejuvenize.
• Retinol step. Illuminize has none. Vitalize and Rejuvenize finish with a separate retinol solution.

SkinMedica Illuminize Peel®: Benefits, Downtime and Who It’s For

What it is. Illuminize uses a blend of alpha-hydroxy acids (mandelic and malic acids) with phytic acid, salicylic acid and resorcinol. It is the only one of the three without a retinol step, which is a large part of why its downtime is so light.

What it does. Illuminize exfoliates the very top layer of skin to brighten a dull complexion, smooth mild roughness and even out minor discoloration. The result is a refresh rather than a correction: skin looks fresher and makeup sits better, but established sun spots and lines will not change meaningfully.

Good candidates.

• First-time peel patients who want to see how their skin responds before trying a more intensive peel
• Anyone with an event coming up who cannot risk visible flaking
• Maintenance between more intensive peels or other treatments

Downtime. Mild redness for a few hours, some tightness, and possibly light flaking around day two or three that is easy to cover. Many patients see no visible peeling at all.

Limitation. If the goal is to correct a concern rather than refresh the skin, Illuminize is usually not enough. It is a strong first peel and a strong maintenance peel, and the wrong choice for moderate sun damage.

What it is. Vitalize combines salicylic acid, lactic acid and resorcinol, followed by a retinol solution applied as a separate final step. That retinol step drives the visible peeling over the following days, and it is why Vitalize delivers more change than Illuminize with downtime most people can manage.

What it does. Over a series, Vitalize improves the appearance of uneven pigmentation, sun damage, fine lines, rough texture, mild acne and post-acne marks. It is SkinMedica’s signature peel and the one most often recommended, because most skin types tolerate it and most patients see a difference after the first treatment.

Good candidates.

• Uneven tone, blotchiness and early sun damage
• Fine lines around the eyes and mouth
• Rough or congested texture
• Mild acne and the marks it leaves behind
• Patients who have had Illuminize and want more correction

Downtime. Redness and tightness on the day of treatment. Flaking usually starts around day two or three, is most noticeable around days three to five, and is largely resolved within a week. It responds well to a gentle moisturizer and strict sunscreen.

Limitation. Vitalize will not fully resolve deeper lines or long-standing sun damage on its own. For those, the conversation moves to Rejuvenize, a longer series, or pairing peels with microneedling.

SkinMedica Rejuvenize Peel™: Benefits, Downtime and Who It’s For

What it is. Rejuvenize lists the same core acids as Vitalize (salicylic acid, lactic acid and resorcinol) and finishes with its own retinol solution step. SkinMedica positions it as the most intensive of its three professional peels.

What it does. Rejuvenize is designed for moderate to advanced sun damage: established sun spots, more pronounced fine lines and wrinkles, uneven pigmentation that has not responded to lighter treatments, and coarse texture. It produces more visible peeling and more noticeable improvement per treatment than the other two.

Good candidates.

• Moderate to advanced visible sun damage
• Fine lines and wrinkles beyond what Vitalize is improving
• Stubborn pigmentation and uneven tone
• Rough, thickened texture
• Patients who have tolerated Vitalize and want a stronger result

Downtime. More redness on the day of treatment and heavier, more obvious peeling over several days, sometimes in sheets rather than flakes. Most patients are presentable with moisturizer by day five to seven. Plan it well away from any important event, and avoid the sun afterward.

Limitation. For mild concerns, Rejuvenize adds downtime without adding visible benefit. For reactive skin, or skin prone to post-inflammatory pigment changes, a provider will usually build up through Vitalize first.

Illuminize vs. Vitalize Peel

Illuminize and Vitalize are the two SkinMedica peels most people choose between for a first or second treatment. Illuminize is gentler, has no retinol step, and brightens and refreshes with little visible peeling. Vitalize adds a retinol step and targets specific concerns: pigmentation, texture, fine lines and acne marks. The trade is a few days of visible flaking.

Illuminize is usually the right choice when downtime is the constraint, or when you want to see how your skin handles a peel. Vitalize is the usual next step when Illuminize has gone well and the goal shifts from glow to correction, or as a first peel when your concerns clearly call for more and your skin history is uncomplicated.

Vitalize vs. Rejuvenize Peel

Vitalize and Rejuvenize share a structure: the same listed core acids and a retinol step at the end. The difference is intensity. Rejuvenize is SkinMedica’s most intensive peel, used for more advanced sun damage, deeper lines and pigmentation that Vitalize has not fully improved, and it brings more noticeable peeling over several days.

Most providers move a patient to Rejuvenize after a good response to Vitalize rather than starting there.

Illuminize vs. Rejuvenize Peel

These two sit at opposite ends of the SkinMedica line and usually suit very different patients. Illuminize is for a refresh with almost no downtime: brighter skin, smoother texture, a first peel, or maintenance. Rejuvenize is for correction of more advanced sun damage, pigmentation and lines, with a week of visible peeling to plan around.

If you are deciding between these two, the real question is usually whether your concern needs correction or refreshing. When the answer is unclear, Vitalize is often the more sensible middle step.

Which SkinMedica Peel Is Strongest?

Rejuvenize Peel™ is the most intensive of SkinMedica’s three professional chemical peels, followed by Vitalize Peel® and then Illuminize Peel®.

Stronger is not automatically better. For mild concerns, a more intensive peel adds peeling and downtime without a better visible result, and for skin prone to pigment changes it raises risk. The right peel is the one matched to your concerns, your skin type and the downtime you can plan for.

How to Choose a SkinMedica Peel

Work through these in order. Most people have an answer by the third question.

1. What are you trying to change?

Be specific. Wanting brighter, fresher skin points to Illuminize or Vitalize. Wanting sun spots to fade points to Vitalize or Rejuvenize, as a series. Wanting lines around the mouth softened points to Rejuvenize, possibly alongside Botox or filler for what a peel cannot reach. The more established the concern, the more intensive the peel usually needs to be.

2. How much visible peeling can you plan around?

If you have a public-facing week or an event within about five days, Illuminize is generally the most appropriate of the three, because minimizing visible peeling is the priority. A few days of flaking opens up Vitalize. A full week makes Rejuvenize an option.

3. Have you had a professional peel before?

If not, most providers start with Illuminize or Vitalize even when your concerns might justify Rejuvenize. How your skin responds to a gentler peel tells your provider how it will handle a more intensive one.

4. What is your skin tone and pigment history?

Deeper skin tones, and anyone who has developed dark marks after a breakout, an insect bite or a previous treatment, are more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. That changes the approach: a gentler peel first, careful pre-treatment preparation, and often a longer series of Vitalize rather than an early move to Rejuvenize. Tell your provider about any history of pigment changes. It matters more than almost anything else on your intake form.

5. Is this a one-time treatment or the start of a plan?

A single Illuminize can be a one-time refresh. Vitalize and Rejuvenize usually give their best results as a series, followed by periodic maintenance, with the spacing set by your provider. Melasma and acne scars

Peels can improve the appearance of melasma but can also aggravate it if the skin is inflamed too aggressively, so a conservative approach, strict sun protection and a home regimen usually matter more than peel intensity. For acne, peels help with active breakouts and the flat red or brown marks left behind; pitted or rolling scars usually respond better to microneedling, and combining the two is common.

What happens during a SkinMedica peel

The visit follows the same shape for all three peels. Your provider assesses your skin and reviews your skincare products, medications, recent treatments, sun exposure, and any history of cold sores or pigment changes. The skin is cleansed and prepped, then the peel solution is applied in controlled layers while your provider watches how your skin responds. For Vitalize and Rejuvenize, the retinol solution goes on as the final step, and your provider will tell you when to wash it off at home. Written aftercare instructions are provided by email.

Aftercare for all three peels

• Do not pick, scrub or peel off flaking skin. Let it come off on its own.
• Pause retinoids, exfoliating acids and scrubs until your provider clears you.
• Moisturize generously with a bland, fragrance-free product.
• Wear broad-spectrum SPF every day. In Arizona this is the single biggest factor in whether results last.
• Avoid heavy sweating, saunas and direct sun for the first several days.
• Call your clinic if you see blistering, unusual swelling, or anything that concerns you.

The bottom line

Illuminize suits a refresh with minimal downtime. Vitalize suits real improvement in tone, texture and early sun damage when you can allow a few days of flaking. Rejuvenize suits more advanced sun damage when you can plan a week around it. When you are torn between two, your provider’s assessment of your skin is the most useful part of the visit.
